A Quick Reference for the Safe Use of Essential Oils
Essential oils are extremely concentrated substances extracted from various parts of plants and trees. Because they occur naturally, many mistakenly assume they are safe and non-toxic whereas some essentials oils are, in fact, toxic and can have serious reactions on the skin, liver and respiratory system. It is important that they be treated with respect and care be taken at all times when using.
A general rule is that essential oils are not safe to consume and they can cause significant poisoning even if small amounts are ingested. The use of undiluted essential oils on sensitive skin or in the nostrils can irritate or burn. Susceptible people may also develop an allergic reaction and a skin rash.
Dogs, Cats, Other Pets and Essential Oils
Many essential oils can be toxic or overwhelming to cats, dogs and other pets since their sense of smell is much more sensitive than humans'. While some diluted essential oils may be used directly on your pet, it is best to refer to an expert before administering oils that can be absorbed through your pets fur (skin) and lungs. If oils end up on your animal’s fur they can be ingested when the animal grooms itself. Some pets may be more sensitive to essential oils than others, so it's important to monitor your pet for any adverse reactions. When using diffusers, ensure the room is well-ventilated and that your pet can leave the area if they choose, For specific advice on using essential oils with your pet, it's best to consult with a veterinarian or a veterinary aromatherapist.
For safe usage and as a general rule, all essential oils must be diluted first into a base carrier unless they are being diffused into the atmosphere. See the guidelines below as to how much essential oil to use based on the volume of an unscented product or base carrier oil.
