The Process – Lampworking
The term “lampwork” refers to a technique used to create glass beads by hand. Torches are used for this process today, but before torches a light source such as an oil fuelled lamp was used to heat and melt glass used in creating beads – hence the name “lampwork”. Though today we no longer use oil fuelled lamps to make our creations, it is still called lampworking since flame is instrumental in the creative process of making art glass beads.
Amber Higgins: A Self Taught Glass Artist
After completing a full time Jewellery Arts program at a local college, Amber came across an article in an American jewellery arts magazine that featured a woman who made her own art glass beads. She instantly knew she had to do this. At the time she knew of no one making their own beads in the Toronto area so Amber ordered a torch, a sample pack of glass and a video. And now, over 20 years later, here she is…Worn Beadies!
